Industrial water and sludge treatment

Industrial water and sludge treatment

In industrial and construction sectors, water is widely used for various purposes — from cooling and energy transfer to production, treatment, and product cleaning. Water management is therefore essential not only from a process efficiency standpoint, but also from an environmental perspective. PROGROUPE provides environmental services and solutions in the field of industrial water and sludge treatment.

In the construction sector, particularly during tunnel excavation, groundwater seeps from the surrounding rock into the tunnel area. These waters are separated from tunnel waters, which may be contaminated by construction activities. Today, contractors are subject to strict requirements for the capture and treatment of tunnel and rock waters. The goal is to prevent the release of pollutants generated during tunnel construction into the surrounding natural environment. To support this, we supply and operate industrial wastewater treatment plants specifically designed for the treatment of tunnel water. We ensure full compliance with all legal requirements regarding measurement, regulation, treatment, and discharge of water and sludge, including data archiving and communication with relevant authorities.

During crude oil processing in refineries, a significant amount of residual sludge containing petroleum substances is generated. This sludge is typically stored in so-called sludge pits. Once these pits are full, the sludge must be removed using a wheel suction dredger and transported for disposal. Due to its petroleum content, disposal must take place at a hazardous waste incineration facility — a very expensive process. Moreover, the capacity of hazardous waste incinerators is limited. Based on our experience with the treatment of hydro-mixtures, we are able to process and reduce the sludge volume by up to 90%. Our solution was validated during a pilot project at the Slovnaft refinery in 2019. Following a successful on-site campaign with our own equipment, we delivered a full-scale sludge treatment unit to the refinery in 2024, including the complete engineering project and necessary permits. The system complies with the strictest fire safety and explosive atmosphere regulations, and the investment payback period is between 2 to 3 years.
